You can track your Royal Mail Recorded Delivery using the tracking number on your receipt. Enter the number on the Royal Mail website or use a platform like Ship24 to view delivery updates. You’ll see progress from dispatch through to delivery confirmation.

Royal Mail Recorded Delivery, also known as Signed For 1st or 2nd Class, includes a signature on delivery and basic tracking. It confirms when an item was posted and when it was delivered, but it doesn’t include full tracking updates throughout the process. It’s commonly used for legal documents, important letters, and small valuables that need delivery proof but not detailed tracking scans.
When you send a Recorded Delivery item, you’ll receive a tracking number (usually printed on your receipt). This number is linked to a barcode scanned at drop-off and when delivery is attempted. You can enter it online through the Royal Mail website, app, or Ship24 to check the latest scan data.
Keep in mind that not every step in the delivery process is scanned. You’ll usually see updates for posting and final delivery, but not all transit locations. If you need more detailed tracking, consider a service like Royal Mail Tracked 24 or Tracked 48.

To send a Recorded Delivery, visit your local Post Office and request a Signed For service. Your item will be weighed, and you’ll receive a printed receipt with a tracking number. Keep this number safe — it’s the only way to check your item’s status.
Use the tracking number on your receipt to check delivery status. You can do this via the Royal Mail website, mobile app, or a third-party tracking service like Ship24. Simply enter the number in the search field to view the latest update.
Some international Recorded items may only show tracking until they leave the UK. Full international tracking usually requires a Royal Mail International Tracked or Tracked & Signed service. Additional fees may apply depending on the destination.
If no one is available to sign for the item, Royal Mail will leave a card and hold the item at your local delivery office for up to 18 calendar days. You can collect it or arrange redelivery. If unclaimed, it will be returned to the sender.
If your item hasn’t arrived, use the tracking number to check its current status. If there are no recent updates after several days, contact Royal Mail customer service. You may be eligible to claim compensation up to £50, depending on the service used.
Royal Mail is testing smart tracking technologies like Bluetooth and RFID tags. These systems offer real-time visibility beyond basic scans. While not yet available for all services, they may eventually improve tracking for high-value deliveries.
Recorded Delivery includes a signature on arrival but offers limited tracking. Tracked 24 provides full scan updates and faster delivery.
